In the 1920s, the three largest car companies in the United States were Ford, General Motors and Chrysler.
Automobiles have given millions of people access to jobs and leisure activities that they couldn’t do before. This access has led to the growth of new industries, such as hotels, restaurants and motels. The cars have also caused harm to the environment, such as polluting the air and consuming undeveloped land. People have died in car accidents, and governments have passed laws to improve driving safety.
The automobile has changed people’s lives in other ways, too. For example, it helped spawn a movement to give women the right to vote. Two women, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke, made a pretty bold car trip in 1916 to advocate for this change. They drove around with “votes for women” banners. This was a big change to society because women did not have the personal freedom or money to drive before this time.
Today, most of the world’s population has a personal automobile. They can use it to travel from one place to another, visit friends and family or go shopping. They help to create jobs, as millions of people work in factories that produce cars and million more at restaurants or gas stations where travelers stop. They have also shaped the way we live, as cities have been built to accommodate them. It would be difficult to imagine how we could survive without the automobile in our everyday lives. It has become a symbol of modern civilization and the promise of the future.
