The word entertainment derives from the Latin intertenere, which itself comes from the root tener, meaning to hold or stretch. The meaning has evolved through the centuries and continues to shape the world we live in.

What is entertainment for one group may be considered a serious endeavor by another. Regardless, the familiar forms of entertainment have demonstrated a capacity to cross over from different media and cultures.
